I’ve never been fond of networking events. I’m usually the one that has to be dragged to one of those functions by a colleague because I never felt the need to network in an environment specifically designed for networking. From my experience, I’ve had better results just standing in line at the supermarket or waiting for my doctor. So, my approach to networking is totally different than those who seek out networking events with dreams of getting a referral. For example, I recently attended an event sponsored by a bar committee. It was an end-of-year networking soiree. To be honest, I only went because a buddy of mine informed me that there was going to be a luncheon and my hearing ended sooner than expected. Yeah, I know being persuaded by food may seem trifling, but a girl has to eat.

Anyway, it was well attended by newly admitted attorneys who were eager to join the professional networker crew. As my buddy and I were heading towards the buffet tables with our mouths salivating, we were approached by “Tom” and “Nancy”. Being armed with business cards, they introduced themselves and waited for us to complete the exchange. They seemed friendly enough. So, we exchanged business cards, which caused “Tom” and “Nancy” to change their tactics. They glanced at my card and saw the printed words: GENERAL PRACTITIONER - to which they exclaimed at the same time, “ooh, you’re a solo.” Their tones and glances translated that phrase to: “oh, you’re just a solo….Next!” Suddenly, their attention was directed to my buddy, who happened to be employed by one of the largest and most coveted firms in the area. This didn’t bother me at all because it allowed me a chance to escape and grab some free food. It was a missed opportunity for them. The fields of law they were interested in were fields that I practiced and could have easily given them referrals. But, every time my buddy tried to include me in the conversation, “Nancy” and “Tom” were quick to exclude me. So, I remained silent.

What “Tom” and “Nancy” didn’t know was that my buddy’s firm was a wretched place to work and that even the partners were secretly planning to start their own practices. So the obvious lesson from this encounter is never judge a book by it’s cover, or in this case, an attorney by her business card. Have any of you had similar experiences? Post a comment and let me know about the dirty people you’ve encountered at these events.
