Edmund, who goes by “Ed,” has one piece of advice for solo practitioners and entrepreneurs:
“Define yourself first, then focus on your business or solo practice. Until you know yourself - how can you help others? I have myself struggled mightily in my transition from the business world to the solo practice world - primarily due to “defining myself as a solo practitioner.” In the business world I was singularly focused. I provided the best legal/insurance risk management advice to commercial real estate transactions that had environmental risk associated with the financing of the property. I knew the stakeholders and how to meet each of their varying needs - some of which were highly complex - ’securitizing a contaminated property.’ Today, after a year plus of solo practice, I am finally understanding my own practice as a solo practitioner. Now I can truly be helpful to others. Part of this ‘process’ has been the idea of not being afraid to try and fail. One of my clients is selling a complex software/web based application in an area that has growing needs - but his customers don’t even know it yet! Tough sell. I have seen him try and fail at his approach to gaining customers. Now we see traction due to a different approach to clients. Given his willingness to try and fail and learn from his mistakes and redirect his efforts, cash flow is starting to increase.”

The piece of advice I offer to clients (and failed to do myself initially) is to plan beyond “solo” stage. Many entrepreneurs start their businesses with a vision of doing “it” better and making some money. They are becoming self-employed. Before they know it, they’ve achieved the baseline of their business plan and are working night and day without a break. At that point, they must decide whether to grow beyond themselves (something that never occurred to most and they don’t have the skills to do) or scale back and make less. They are also so busy at that point that they are unable to focus on strategy, growth, and management. This ceiling can be avoided by planning for what the business will look like once the entrepreneur is maxed out.
